Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy is a restrictive procedure that permanently removes a portion of the stomach, creating a new tubular shaped stomach. The new stomach restricts the amount of food able to be consumed at one time.

This procedure does not involve any rerouting of the intestinal tract. Patients lose weight due to the small pouch which limits the amount of food a patient can eat.

Also the portion of the stomach that is removed is thought to be responsible for secreting Ghrelin, the hormone that is responsible for appetite and hunger. By removing this portion of the stomach, the appetite hormone is reduced to almost nothing, usually causing a loss of appetite. This procedure is also done laparoscopically.
